What is slow fashion? Why should you care and what you can do

What is slow fashion?

what is slow fashion

Slow fashion is about consuming and creating fashion consciously and with integrity. It connects social and environmental awareness and responsibility with the pleasure of wearing beautiful, well-made, and lasting clothing (as compared to the immediate gratification of fast Fashion). — Kat Collings, Editor in Chief at Who What Wear

Slow fashion, is in short the opposite of fast fashion. It's respect for the environment, the people that made your clothes, and for yourself (and for how your hard earned money is spent)

Why you should care

Today's clothing industry is one of the most labor intensive and polluting industries.

  • Less than 1% of clothing is recycled
  • We only wear clothes for approximately 2 years
  • The fashion industry is responsible for around 10% of global greenhouse emissions and 20% of the global waste production.

On a personal level, constantly chasing the latest trends for the cheapest price may leave you unhappy, unfulfilled and broke.

What can you do?
As fashion prodigy Vivien Westwood very well put it "Choose well, buy less and make it last"

slow fashion principles

Choose well
Make every purchase a love story. Slow fashion is not about depriving yourself of the pleasure of a beautiful piece. Take your time to discover your personal style and do some research on the origin and the materials of each item.

Buy less
Choose quality over quantity. It's a cliche but it's true. Even when you're on a tight budget you know that one good quality t-shirt/sweater/pair of shoes will last you longer than three cheap ones making it ultimately a more economical decision.

Make it last
Finally, once you have committed to a purchase, make sure to take good care of your clothes and shoes so that you enjoy them for as long as possible.
Since we try to practice what we preach, we have a few posts you might want to check:
