Product Care

Espadrilles:

Espadrilles are wonderful summer shoes: stylish comfortable and one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable options for your feet!

As they are made of totally natural materials (jute rope, rubber, fabric and leather) they need some special care to maintain their good condition for many summers to come.

1. Choose quality soles

First of all, the quality of the sole is key. Espadrilles shoes prices range from €12 to €200 or more and although you don’t necessarily have to break the bank for a good pair, a very cheap one is much more likely to deteriorate after 10-15 times you wear it. At Maslinda Designs we use top quality jute soles that are made in Spain using traditional techiquies.

2. Make sure you have the right size

Make sure you get the right size (read this post about this). Although they do stretch a bit after a couple of times you wear them, if you get them too small the stitching might become loose because of too much tension.

3. Avoid contact with water

Then, the most important thing is not to get them wet. Espadrilles and water do not well together at all! If for some reason you do get them wet (you got caught in the rain, you stepped into a puddle of water, a wave splashed on your feet, you get the point) take them off as soon as possible, gently pat them with a dry cloth to absorb as much excess water as possible, fill them with crinkled tissue paper and let them dry in the shade. Most likely, they will be as good as new in a day or so.

4. Clean gently

If they need cleaning, get an old toothbrush or a piece of soft cloth and some lukewarm water with some washing liquid. Rub the stains gently, pat to dry and let dry in the shade.

5. Store properly

Your new espadrilles usually come stuffed with some tissue paper. Keep it and use it whenever you take them off to help maintain their shape or reuse some tissue paper from a package. Store them in whatever way makes sense to you ( their original box , a shoes tree, on a shelf or drawer or in a hanging shoe case) but make sure it is a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight, moisture and excessive heat.

6. Switch pairs regularly

You might be in love with your new pair of espadrilles, but like with all shoes avoid to wear them every single day as this will reduce their lifespan and it’s not good for your feet either. If you find yourself wearing them one week in a row, give them a couple of days of rest. Furthermore, while espadrilles are a perfect city of vacation shoe, they are not trainers or trekking shoes so don’t treat them as such.

Although they are mostly summer shoes, in many areas of the world can be worn well into fall but eventually, you will have to put them ways for winter. When you do so, make sure to store them in a dry place to avoid mold stains.

Follow these simple advice and your espadrilles and they will last you for many summers to come 🔆
